Many of my toy gift guides will build upon each other as it’s always nice to add-on to toys you already own rather than starting an entirely new collection! Here are my top toy ideas for 2 year olds, whether you’re shopping for a little girl or little boy, or looking for something any child can enjoy!
Toy Ideas for a 2 Year Old - Best Gifts for Toddlers
These are the best toy ideas for a two year old toddler!
Perfect for a birthday gift, Christmas gift, or a just-because present 🙂
While all toys can be enjoyed by both boys and girls, I like to break my lists into categories.
Gift Ideas for a Two Year Old Boy or Girl
I have both sons and daughters and have found that my children often stick to gender sterotypes when it comes to their favorite toy items, but I also gravitate towards buying neutral items when possible to make it easier to pass them down to siblings too!
Water play is always a fun time for this age group and as toddlers learn about the tasks the family participates in they want to mimic and copy everything the adults and older children do so this sink is SO FUN.
Even without the water option my toddler loves to load and unload the sink and the utensils can easily be used with play food items too!
Craft time is something I like to slowly introduce with my toddlers. Because, hello MESS and the struggle of things often ending up in the mouth.
Washable is key when it comes to crafting with little ones and finger painting is a perfect first-craft as children at this stage have better hand control but aren't quite yet able to master holding a paint brush.
I wouldn't recommend starting play-doh as an early two year old but I think play-doh is an excellent set as a birthday gift at two because it's something they can grow into.
We don't own a ton of play-doh sets. I purchased this one for my oldest child when he was first old enough to enjoy playing with it and it's held the test of time and is PLENTY of options for creative play-doh experiences!
With developed eye coordination comes the ability to go beyond just stacking building blocks up and knocking them over to beginning to build creations and enjoy a variety of shapes for building projects.
Many people love Lego Duplo but I like to wait to introduce those!
This is another item that will grow with your toddler and allow additional items to be added on as they get older to increase enjoyment and keep them occupied for longer periods of time.
This block set is not only gorgeous but is heirloom quality to pass down to future grandbabies and has SO many activities beyond just basic building blocks! We have this set and LOVE IT so much - all four of my kids enjoy it!
We own a solid dozen of these Look and Find books. Literally. They are phenominal for the car, church, doctors appointments or just some quiet time.
Toddlers love to point at things and name them and Look and Find books are great for practicing this skill! They make tons of different characters and I love the HUGE size and the board book material to really last!
Jumbo sized sidewalk chalk is great for toddler's to be able to handle on their own to make their beautiful driveaway artwork. Also makes a great gift for a birthday present as every kid can always use some chalk!
There are so many toys that have a bunch of buttons and make a bunch of sounds so I try to be very selective when it comes to those items.
We love this laptop and it's a toy that our two year olds enjoy but is also played with often by the older kids as well. It has interactive features to help hold that short attention span and the buttons are fun as well as the opening and closing option of of the laptop too!
I also love the little handle as two year olds enjoy carrying things around and be independent in their ablility to do things themselves!
These mini-board books are awesome. The box it all comes in is just as much as a gift as the books themselves.
So fun to carry around and the front stays closed nicely even when being transported. It's also great for the fine motor practice when using their little hands to fit the books into the box just right so the lid can close.
Kids of all ages enjoy fun active play jumping on the trampoline. We keep this in our playroom and all of the kids love it! The bar is great for the younger age to be able to hold on and jump, jump, jump!
This makes a GREAT gift that keeps giving all year long. A subscription service that sends a new package to your doorstep every few months with items directed at your child's current developmental stage. Gorgeous toys that LAST! A fabulous item to put on grandma's gift list!
Best Gifts for Two Year Old Boy
At two years old boys are SO FUN and wild and adventerous and it's an age where my sons both developed their own, unique, personalities and started to have their own interests in things they enjoyed!
Of course all of the gender neutral items above are excellent for boys or girls and many of them have color options if you want something more gender specific, but these items are ones I consider more "boy toys":
My all time favorite toddler boy toy is this truck carrier. I have so many memories of my oldest son playing with his set and it is one of those toys that I will be packing up and keeping for the grandkids someday.
This is also my favorite gift to give to a toddler boy as it's very afforable and I know it will be well-loved!
Full disclosure: I haven't yet had any personal experience with this toy. My youngest son is turning two this year and I've already purchased this after a recommendation from a friend who says it's her sons FAVORITE toy EVER.
I know the repetative motion of putting the cars down the track over and over will be something he'll love!
Best Gifts for Two Year Old Girl
Just like two year old boys, two year old girls really develop their own fun personalities and interests as two year olds.
I love all the fun boy toys and little girlie items!
This is another item that boys will enjoy just as much as girls...I just haven't ever been able to find one that is more "boyish" themed.
Kids LOVE hearing themselves and this microphone legit works. It also has some fancy MP3 option that we've never used. We just like to let them "sing" and perform and I like that it's all attached in an easy-to-carry boombox so there aren't long wires to deal with!
All two year olds love to gather (and hoard!) every item possible and place it in some sort of bag.
I find this to be especially true of my girls and love to gift them a little backpack. Small and light enough for them to carry themselves around the house (and great if they have older kids in school that they want to copy!) and also a legit book bag that can be used as needed too!
This is a bigger ticket item, but well worth it. And another one that both our girls and boys have LOVED and gotten SO MUCH USE OUT OF.
I did a TON of research and read lots and lots of reviews before investing in a play kitchen and I chose this one because I love the design and I also love that there is so much storage space to store all the playfood items.
