Super Easy DIY Toy Story Theme Family Costume Ideas

Each year, our family of six loves to come up with a fun theme for our Halloween costumes. We are a Disney-loving family, so our themes often reflect our Disney fandom, and our costumes would also work wonderfully for a Disney cosplay at the parks or even for Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party at Walt Disney World in Florida, or even Oogie Boogie Bash – a Disney Halloween Party at Disney’s California Adventure.

Family Halloween costumes are our favorite, and this year we decided on a classic we all love – Toy Story! Toy Story costumes are really fun and work well for groups or families of all sizes, as there are just SO many characters to choose from.

We stuck pretty close to the classics, and each chose a favorite character from the Toy Story movies for our looks. This was actually the first family costume theme we have ever repeated!

Simple Toy Story Costume Idea: Buzz Lightyear

My husband has been a good sport over the years and has declared he’s down to dress up as ANY character…as long as the costume is simple, comfortable, and not embarrassing.

Being that my husband is 6’6″ his height often dictates which character he “needs” to be. He wanted to be Duke Caboom, but since he’s not a classic character in most of the films, he was vetoed.

However, Buzz Lightyear was a very easy one for him, and this costume would also be very comfortable for walking around a theme park!

We live in a warm climate, but if you live in a cooler climate, another simple costume for Buzz to wear would be a onesie like this one or even a fun hoodie look. For the “astronaut pants”, I actually hunted Goodwill and found these, but here is a similar option (and you could also always just go with a neutral gray like these). Or you could always go all out and purchase a full Buzz Lightyear costume – but I’m a fan of piecing together our own costumes. Diy costumes are just more fun, right?

Toy Story Costume: Woody

I love that my teen son offered to be Sheriff Woody – a throwback to when he was little and was obsessed with the Toy Story gang, had them all among his favorite toys, and dressed up as Woody for Halloween.

Woody Costume Set (includes plaid shirt, Woody’s vest, red bandana, cowboy hat and badge!) /// Woody’s Cowboy “Boots”

He just wore a regular pair of blue jeans and his normal shoes to complete the look. I love the boot shoe covers as he’s not a boot-wearing kinda guy so it was a MUCH cheaper option than purchasing actual cowboy boots that he’d only wear once!

I debated making his costume myself as we could have easily used a plain yellow shirt and drawn the red lines on it and cut out a vest from some cow-print material. But I felt like a teen boy is already sacrificing by being willing to dress up, I didn’t want to further embarrass him by having a pieced together costume his Mommy made 😉

I love that we still had his trusty sidekick, Bullseye, to do a comparison photo 12 years in the making!

Pals to infinity and beyond!

Toy Story Halloween: Jessie Costume

My oldest daughter, Britt, was also eager to recreate her childhood look as Jessie the yoldin’ cowgirl. She’d recently learned to braid, so rather than purchase a red wig for Jessie’s hair, she went with her natural hair and styled it into braided pigtails. It looked adorable!

Red Cowgirl Hat /// Brown Boots /// Bullseye Stuffed Animal

I LOVE a DIY costume, and Britt had the most elements to her look that we made ourselves. We found a plain white button-down top from Goodwill (similar options here) and then used yellow fabric to create Jessie’s shirt. I drew the lines on the fabric using a red marker and then hot-glued the pieces onto the shirt. Very much in the same way I did when she was a baby, using a white onesie 🙂

We found a pair of jeans at Goodwill (along with her brown belt), then cut out some cowprint fabric and used hot glue to attach it to the legs of the jeans.

I love easy diy costumes, and this was about as easy as it comes. A quick trip to the local craft store and we had it put together. You could easily up the look if you wanted to purchase some red yarn and make your own version of Jessie’s wig (or you can even buy one here).

She was much happier with her costume this year than on her first Halloween 😉

They’ve always got a friend in each other!

Toy Story Themed Costumes: Bo-Peep

When deciding our theme for our family Halloween costumes our youngest daughter, Tess, loved the idea of being Bo Peep.

This character fits her personality perfectly as she’s that adorable blend of sweet and fierce!

I love her Bo Peep Costume Dress with bonnet – it was not only cute but very comfortable (would be great for a party at Disney World or Disneyland too!).

If you wanted a truly diy for this look, you could use a simple blue dress from the closet and add in pink touches!

We had to hunt the internet a bit to find the official Toy Story-branded staff for her (got it off Ebay) but there are plenty of replicas here to choose from.

“I found my movin’ buddy!”

DIY Toy Story Group Costume: Slinky Dog

We love figuring out fun costume ideas for the whole family, and naturally, the kids’ costumes come first in the decision-making process.

I’m all about easy costumes, but if I do need to purchase my costume, I prefer it to be something I can wear again.

When Slinky Dog was suggested as my look, I jumped on it. An excuse for a cute new matching set? Sign me up 😉

For my Slinky Dog face, I purchased pieces of brown felt, white felt, tan felt, and black felt. (This package comes with plenty of shades of brown and tan!). Then I cut them out to resemble his face and used hot glue to attach all the pieces.

When it came to the “slinky” portion of my costume, I struggled a bit and then decided to keep it simple. I purchased a pack of silver pipe cleaners and attached them together then wrapped them around my torso. I thought it was a great option for that slinky look while still being comfortable!

DIY Toy Story Group Costume: Alien

Our youngest child, Spear, had so much fun helping put together his alien costume! I found a long-sleeve blue shirt and already had some blue pants for him to wear.

We glued some large green pom-poms around the shirt collar and added a Pizza Planet patch. Then he topped it with this fun alien headband to complete his look.

With a cute alien like this in our group, of course, we won the prize for best costume at my sister-in-law’s costume party 🙂

I purchased a couple of t-shirts to bring along with us to the party so anyone who may have forgotten to dress up could join in our group!

Toy Story is such a great group theme because it has SO MANY characters. My husband’s aunt wore my Rex t-shirt and hid most of her arms in the sleeves to fit the part.

I was also hoping my in-laws would want to wear matching Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head costumes but they had their own themed ideas for the event.

We had so much fun putting our family-themed costumes together and hope our Toy Story Characters help inspire your next group event, trick-or-treat outing, or just a fun way to bring a favorite movie to life!
