Harry Potter Family Halloween Costumes Perfect for Hogwarts

Every year our family goes all out in creating our themed costumes. This year was finally the year! Now that Spear has seen all of the Harry Potter movies, Tess is starting to listen to the Harry Potter audiobooks and Britt continues to be our family “Potter Head,” it was an easy decision to put together Harry Potter family Halloween costumes!

We appreciate HalloweenCostumes.com for sponsoring our Harry Potter-themed looks this year. They make it so easy to put together fun, unique costumes and create a diy costume experience without all the headache and hassle of driving all over town in search of all the must-have items.

It is super important to us to be as authentic as possible in our costumes each year, and this year’s were on point thanks to HalloweenCostumes.com and their detailed items!

Something we really love when creating our family looks is to go for characters who aren’t as obvious, well-known, or popular. We love when someone sees our looks and “gets it.” Most people won’t know who we are, but the ones who DO know will be excited when they see us. It’s fun to be more niche.

While Harry Potter is a pop-culture reference that most people are familiar with, there are SO many character options that only the true Harry Potter fans will appreciate. We had so much fun deciding which of our family members would best match up with each less-popular character.

Harry Potter Costume

Spear likes to play dress up and usually enjoys dressing up as a “bad guy.” He gave a pretty good case as to why he should be Draco Malfoy, but you can’t have a Harry Potter family Halloween costume theme without having Harry himself!

Spear was the perfect pick for the cutie wizard, and he had so much fun casting spells. You can tell he took his role very seriously 😉

I will add if you’re considering watching the movies with younger children that the further along in the series you go, the more dark and scary they become. Spear is TOUGH and got a little spooked with the dementor scenes but overall really enjoyed the films. We even recently took the kids to see Harry Potter and the Cursed Child on Broadway and he absolutely loved it.

I bought this jumbo eye pencil, and it was super quick and easy to draw on the famous Harry Potter scar.

Here are the items we used to put together Harry’s wizarding look:

Hagrid Costume

When Dad is 6’6″ he is the pretty ideal person to play the beloved Hagrid!

Zach is one of the only ones in the family who read the books and was a fan of the movies when we watched them with friends in college (meanwhile, I slept through them all the first time through…I promise I stayed awake once we watched with the kids though!).

His favorite ride when we visiting the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Orlando Resort is Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure so getting to play the beloved Hagrid himself wasn’t too much of a stretch for Zach.

Bellatrix Lestrange Costume

We’ve discussed Harry Potter as a theme for many, many years. Britt is THE biggest Harry Potter fan. She listens to the audiobooks on repeat, literally non-stop every day. (She is a Hufflepuff!)

She’d always envisioned her costume moment as Hermione Granger. She always loved Hermione when she was younger (she even went through a stage where she spoke with a British accent) and they favor each other with Britt’s thicker hair.

However, when it came time to decide our looks, we talked about how, really, if you have a Harry you don’t need to have his best friends, Hermione Granger or Ron Weasley. By removing the pressure to have everyone be a “main character,” it freed us up to have more fun with it.

If you’ve seen our family costumes in the past you’ll notice a trend for Britt. My sunshine girl loves to be a darker character and typically ends up in a costume wearing mostly black (I think she’s owned a pair of black combat boots in every size at this point!).

She was super excited with the thought of being Bellatrix Lestrange – an evil character who is also a bit funny!

As a mama I couldn’t get over how GROWN Britt looks in her costume!

Here are all the pieces to Bellatrix’s look:

A little sidenote about this costume: Britt loves it SO MUCH and it works for so many different costume options. She will actually be re-using it as an Elphaba costume from Wicked!

Creating fun, family memories while intentionally parenting is so important to me. Come follow along on our day-to-day journey as I overshare it all!

Luna Lovegood Costume

Sometimes characters just ARE a person and that’s exactly why there was no doubt that our Tessie had to be Luna Lovegood.

Luna is not only adorable like our Tess but she is also kind, and sweet, and a good friend to Harry and all who know her at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

I’m pretty sure if both Tess and Luna were in a room together that no one would be able to tell who is who!

Luna Lovegood’s looks and alll the accessories (which are also SUCH a Tess thing – she is obsessed with the earrings and bag!):

Professor Snape Costume

Severus Snape is in all the Harry Potter books and movies and is such a classic character. When deciding costumes it would make sense for Kye to play Albus Dumbledore as he is also a well-known character who plays an important role in Harry’s life.

However, playing Snape would just be too much fun for Kye to pass up. And he ROCKED it.

I love that my older teens are still so great at getting into character! They take their rolls seriously and always have so much fun with it.

A key element, in my opinion, is letting them choose their character. Kye really leaned in with Snape and it was perfection. I don’t think J.K. Rowling herself could have written a more perfect role for Kye to play!

Professor Trelawney Costume

We had the toughest time as a family deciding which character would be best needed to round out our family costume. I am always down for whatever and wanted to make sure I played a part that would help complete our overall looks.

We discussed the idea that I’d be a good Dumbledore. It also made sense for me to dress up as Professor McGonagall. However, I noticed that the costume for McGongall is basically just your average witch looking costume.

I felt like we had a good bit of black with Snape, Harry and Bellatrix, so I wanted to add some color to our group look, and we thought it’d be fun for me to play the role of Sybill Trelawney!

She’s a bit of a wacky professor, and I had fun getting to bring out my silly side and play a side character that I knew true Harry Potter fans would appreciate.

Professor Trelawney costume details and accessories:

  • Deluxe Professor Trelawney Costume – includes dress, skirt, vest, headband and eyeglasses
  • Crystal ball globe
  • Tan Boots
  • Random bangles of layered jewelry is all my own 😉 Saving everything pays off during family costume season!
  • I also just made my hair as messy as I could but if you need a blonde wig this one would also work for my favorite Hogwarts professor!

Harry Potter Family Halloween Costumes

This year’s Halloween family costumes were ones for the books! We had so much fun coming up with Harry Potter family costumes. The best part was each of us arriving at our family Halloween party with the whole family acting out our roles of our favorite characters.

We appreciate HalloweenCostumes.com for helping us bring our group costume idea to life. Ordering all of our pieces made the iconic characters come to life in an easy peasy way! We were super impressed with the quality of the pieces – they really were the perfect costumes of our entire family.
