Summer Recap: Week 1

I work with several companies and links to any products within posts are affiliate.

Ahhhh summer is HERE!!! I love, love doing my weekly summer recaps during the summer. I know a lot of bloggers do a “weekend recap” each weekend of the year, but I find during the school year it makes the most sense to stick to monthly recaps but switch to weekly for summertime since we are always SO busy having FUN!!! For the summer weekly posts I start them on a Saturday and end that next Friday πŸ™‚

Summer kicked off for us the weekend of Mother’s Day. We had a wonderful time as a family the entire weekend which you can read about here πŸ™‚

Zach had to head to Atlanta the night of Mother’s Day for his infusion the next morning so the kids and I had a chill evening and came up with our Summer Bucket List!!!

It’s also SUPER important to me to have a rough schedule for the days we are home during the summer. I’m very, very hardcore about balancing fun and structure during summertime (you can read more about that in this post!) Obviously this is SUPER rough (like it’s not going to take us an hour to eat meals haha) but it gives me a basic idea of what to aim for each day.

I love the gifts my babies (and hubby!) got me for Mother’s Day. If you are local, they shopped at Simply Silver!

The first week of summer Kye still had school. The girls finished up a full week before he did. Since Zach was gone most of the week (he worked out of town after his infusion) that meant we still had to get up early and take Kye to school even though it was summer πŸ˜‰ The upside of that meant when we woke up Monday morning and saw that our pool was turning green that we’d already be out and about early enough to run to Walmart and get shock for it so it’d be good to go for our TWO pool playdates that day!

Waiting on friends to come swim!

Britt has attended her preschool for 3 years now and has so many sweet friends. We wanted to have a couple of them over to celebrate the end of their preschool time together. Vivi is moving to Tennessee and Addie will be going to a different school than Britt in the fall! We had a great time together swimming and playing πŸ™‚

Tess does her best to keep up with the big kids πŸ˜‰

During naps I got an email letting us know the birth mom we’d presented to had chosen a family, but just not ours. I will def talk a lot more about this in an upcoming adoption post but I’m thankful I got the news on SUCH a busy day! I had too much to do to even stop and really get upset or anything about it.

After naps Keeli came over with pizza and her sweet babies for another pool playdate!

The easy life πŸ˜‰

My kids think Eli is their cousin haha!

Tess did SO awesome with Millie. We kept catching her loving on Millie and it made my heart happy to see. I’m so eager for our own baby to love on!

First day of summer was pretty awesome!

We took Kye to school again the next morning then headed over to CFA for a breakfast playdate with EllaKate! I was blown away by EK’s imagination and she was such a sweet, instant, friend with the girls. I see many more playdates in our future for sure!

Kye got home from school and had some “Mommy time” which really means “Murder Mommy at Checkers time”

I needed some chill time at home so on Day 3 we pulled out the crafts πŸ˜‰

Have y’all had this yogurt? It’s Britt’s FAVORITE. Chocolate and Mocha? She’s obsessed!

Chill mode outfit!

While Britt had gymnastics the other two and I ran into Simply Silver to exchange one thing I got for Mother’s Day (Daddy got me a “Maui Necklace” that wasn’t really my style). We looked around for awhile and Tess and Kye made several suggestions on alternatives but I ended up just keeping a credit at the store to spend later when I can go solo and really look!

Kye kept suggesting to buy a dog themed key chain b/c they were on clearance. He has my “dealz” way of thinking already haha!

Thursday Britt had her first appointment at the Chiropractor! I wrote this post a couple years ago about the benefits we had with chiropractics for Tess.  When we had Britt evaluated for speech and they mentioned her jaw and some minor issues with it related to her speech, I immediately thought of chiropractics. I was nervous taking Britt to be adjusted because she can be a tad dramatic. Leading up to it I didn’t tell her ANYTHING. Not where we were going or anything at all. I’ve found that Kye does best with being prepared, Britt does best with no prep at all. Once we arrived I simply told her she was going to get a little massage to help with her speech. She did AWESOME with the appointment! No tears and was SO BRAVE!!!

I went from there to get my hair done! We’ve been working and working to fix some pretty hefty damage I had and it’s REALLY getting there! Angel, my stylist, also taught me how to FINALLY use a dang curling iron! Z was SO PUMPED haha

It was a tad crazy of a day as I then had to run to Kye’s school for his end of the year party. We had a MASSIVE amount of YooHoos so I volunteered to bring them as a contribution item πŸ˜‰ These kids got hooked up with cookies and ice cream sundaes!

Duh. I didn’t turn one down πŸ˜‰

So proud of Kye for receiving the “Master Reader” award for his class this year!

We’ve been SO BLESSED two years in a row with AMAZING teachers!!! It makes me nervous for next year because I don’t know how we’d possibly continue this streak!

Really so many of the class events aren’t necessary for parental involvement. But I know that all too soon the days of Kye wanting me there may come to an end so I do everything I can to attend everything he wants me to!

My grandmother ALWAYS had yoo-hoos at her house. It was “her thing” and all of us cousins grew up drinking them on a regular basis. I think of her anytime I see a yoo-hoo and drinking one on the way home just tasted like childhood to me!

If you’ve been a reader for awhile then you probably already know about all my foot issues (you can read about them all here, if that’s interesting to you haha!). I’m still VERY careful about footwear and I ice my foot every single night to help keep down the inflammation. A blog friend reached out to me who also has foot issues and we’ve been trading tips. She suggested these ice socks and hello #lifechanging. They are AWESOME! If you struggle with any foot issues, def grab these!

We’ve been almost married 10 years and, like most couples, all of our appliances and such were wedding gifts. It’s amazing to me how long this stuff can last but we’re def starting to see the need to replace things here and there. My MIL got me a pressure cooker back when we were engaged and it recently started worrying me. I know pressure cookers have some safety risks and I wasn’t about to mess around when it came to that! I hunted for a stainless steel one (you don’t want aluminum) and found a great deal on this one! Super clear instructions, great size, and wonderful quality. I’ve done beans in it a few times now and it’s been great. I know the hot thing in kitchen appliances right now is an instapot and y’all know I want one for SURE but I keep waiting on a deal πŸ˜‰

I tried this meal out for the first time and O.M.G it’s AMAZING. So, so simple and we all really, really loved it!

Daddy’s HOME!!!

Last day of 2nd grade!

We ALL have those #momfail moments. Well. When Kye started preschool I bought him a copy of Oh The Places You’ll Go (By Dr Seuss) and had all of his teachers sign it each year as the school year came to a close. Of course I also bought the book for Britt when she started school and began the same tradition with her. The day before Kye’s last day of school I randomly remembered the dang book. And realized I’d completely forgotten to send Britt’s with her for her teacher to sign…and even worse never even ordered a book for Tess at all!!! haha! Typical proof of life with three kids. I ordered Tess a copy and am hoping to take both hers and Britt’s to the school when Tess goes back and have them sign. Oops!

The girls and I had to go to UPS and while we were out we ran by our favorite family jeweler (Steel’s if you’re local!) and got my ring cleaned. I wanted it to look fresh and sparkly for our 10th Wedding Anniversary!

Friday Frolic is at our local YMCA and it’s a free play time for kids up to age 6. It’s on most Fridays and is something both of my girls LOVE. It’s tough to find times to take them because Kye can’t go so I can only take them on Fridays when he’s busy and they are at home for some reason. It worked out on Kye’s last day of school that I was able to take the girls up there! I know Britt is our current gymnast but y’all, Tess needs to be enrolled too. My rule of thumb has always been wait until the kids ask but I see how awesome Tess does at so many of the areas and think she’d really be great at it!

She LOVES the bars and will pull herself up!

Not sure what this is haha

Sweet sisters!

She walked the whole beam by herself and even posed at the end!

Such a fun girl time morning! Britt was running around with new friends most of the time and also has no fear of heights!

We had fun at Friday Frolic but I also had SO MUCH ANXIETY. Back at Christmas time Kye had a half day of school and I totally and completely forgot to get him off the bus. (you can read about it here, def one of my lowest moments) I was basically freaking out all morning with the girls worried that I’d lose track of time or that it’d slip my mind again or something. We were home PLENTY early and were out waiting for him on the porch. He said he was only a little nervous about getting home and not seeing us there haha!

Britt’s school used the Abeka program and they offered additional book packages to continue to work on her reading. I bought a set of the books so we could work through them this summer as well as continue with them in the fall to keep her reading skills up to speed! She’s been SO thrilled about them!

Figuring it out!!! Whoop Whoop!

The past few years we have had a very casual tradition of going out to eat around the last day of school to celebrate the start of summer. This year we went to Rodeo Mexican Restaurant at the suggestion of many Facebook friends as a cheaper option for dining with a family πŸ˜‰

Proud of Britt who wanted to order legit Mexican food rather than just chicken and fries. She loved her quesadilla and request refried beans in it too!

Kye’s lucky day…he found a dollar bill on the floor!

We surprised the kids with a stop at Bruster’s! It’s VERY affordable for our family because Tess eats free and because I had a fully punched card so Zach’s was free too πŸ˜‰ We eat froyo so much but, whew, it’s expensive! I forgot how much cheaper Brusters is!

We are SUPER proud of all of our children for their great school years. But we wanted to do something extra special in honor of Kye and Britt. Kye didn’t pull a single clip (no disciplinary actions taken) the entire school year (he didn’t last year either). Britt not only didn’t pull a clip all year…but she has yet to pull a single clip for her entire school career. Tess is our current winner for most pulled clips…both in a school year as well as overall in an entire school career haha! Making good choices is something we value VERY highly and we’re so proud of Kye and Britt for making such positive choices this year!

We had a full and fun first week of summer!

Summer Recap: Week 1

I work with several companies and links to any products within posts are affiliate.

I really enjoyed doing weekly summer recaps last summer so I’m keeping that up this summer as well! Britt’s last day of school was Thursday May 12th so this “week” is a little longer than a normal week as I’m covering the 13th through the 20th!

Casey and I are very much alike in our love of going and doing things and making memories through experiences with our kids! May was a super tough month for both of us (for different reasons) and I’m thankful we were able to lean on each other through those moments and able to both just be hardcore about having FUN!

We kicked off summer with another trip to the strawberry farm! We had a not-so-great experience a couple months prior so this time we found a new place to go and it was MUCH better. No dead sheep and actual good quality berries πŸ˜‰

Kye still had school for another week so this week was all about Britt and Tess!

Mr. No Fear

Haha Casey is always right there πŸ˜‰

Carter and Tess are SO adorable together!

Couldn’t resist some homemade ice cream!

The week prior to our strawberry patch visit Zach had his back surgery and Casey and Jordan went through the most heartbreaking experience of finding out their baby, at 16 weeks pregnant, no longer had a heartbeat. It was a REALLY tough time and they def continue to need prayers during this healing process. On our way home we saw a pretty rainbow that was literally out of nowhere. It hadn’t rained or anything. We saw a similar rainbow when we left Cole and Gabi’s wedding last August and rainbows are kinda a special thing with our family as a reminder of Austin (you can see more about the rainbow connection here). It felt like this rainbow was something special and a perfect reminder of God’s promise to us when Casey needed that the most πŸ™‚

Zach was still on mega recovery mode so mine and Casey’s wanting (more like needing haha) to go and do came at a good time as it was best for Zach to have an empty house to rest in (3 kids miiiiiight make resting tough around here!). Bob and Larry came to town and we went to meet em!

As we went to leave Tess got a little more daring…

That same day Payton had her birthday party during nap time! It worked out well because Zach wasn’t able to lift Tess yet so she slept while I took the big kids to the party! They had a BLAST as it was at our YMCA and was gymnastics themed!

We love our Payton!

Our church family was INCREDIBLE during Zach’s surgery and recovery! A family came and mowed our grass and many friends and family brought food. It was a HUGE blessing and it seemed like every day more cards arrived in the mail from our church family letting Zach know he was in their prayers. We are truly so blessed!

Had to get some Sunday morning pics!

Britt’s first full week of summer kicked off and we were ready for some FUN! Daddy was still recovering that week and I tried to keep the girls busy so he could get the rest he needed. It was beautiful weather (the heat really held off for awhile this year) so walks were awesome!

Britt was all about writing on dry erase boards while Tess did her independent playtime!

Tess tried to be Houdini and yanked our table runner in our breakfast nook. Every one of the vases I had as a centerpiece on the table fell on the floor. Lovely.

Since Zach was home I just took Tess with me and ran to town to get new stuff for the table. It was a NIGHTMARE. I “ran into” too many places to handle with a toddler. It was all quick stops which doesn’t work out well and she ended up having an accident so I had to take her into Pier 1 in just her tank top and panties bahaha quality parenting at it’s finest!

I LOVE that they are now playing together and having fun together!

We had a girly morning painting nails…

and painted Tess’s for the first time!

Whew. Winding down this school year was tough for me emotionally. Whenever I drop Kye off at school he ALWAYS turns and looks back for me and waves at me. It makes my heart melt every single time because I know the day is coming when he’ll be more interested in friends than looking back to wave to his mommy

More playing together so sweetly!

Casey and I both have Wild Adventures passes this year so we’re all about putting ’em to good use!

This tiger was hilarious

I have never seen a dress up character pick up a child right?!?!?

And then he tried to ride in our stroller?!?!

Britt’s fav πŸ™‚

Our favorite ride haha

Tess is all about walking around like a big kid with her sister!

Britt’s ride request was the ferris wheel

This little jeep ride is something I’d never seen before and was hilarious. The guy running the ride made it very “Jungle Cruiseish” in his announcing. It was awesome.

I can just hear Carter’s cute voice saying “No Tessie!”

Safari ride is a must with toddlers

As is the petting farm!

Friday was Kye’s last day of school so I made some strawberry homemade ice cream (using the berries we picked the week prior) to officially kick off SUMMER!!!

Practicing her letters during independent playtime!

Our girls LOVE the Friday Frolic at the YMCA. Britt will be in school on Friday’s so she won’t get to go anymore plus the age cut off is 5 so she’s close to that point too. We wanted to make sure we had one more Friday before summer to enjoy it since Kye is too old to participate!

Tess carried her chapstick around with her and kept offering it to people haha

Carter and Tess loved this slide but omg it wasn’t on any sort of padding or anything. Just straight up concrete under it. SO not safe! I usually don’t get overly worried about my kids getting a boo boo but Carter fell from the top of the slide and hit that concrete and it was so scary!!! They really need to do something to make that safer!!! I’m so glad he was okay and now Casey and I are gonna be hardcore about that dang slide.

I’m glad Tess won’t be in school on Fridays so we can go a lot this school year, she LOVES it!

Best buddies!

Since my massage situation was a bust in Cali Zach set up a massage for me the day before our planned Mother’s Day celebration day. Even though the celebration ended up getting moved (you can read about that here) I kept the appointment for the massage. I needed that junk!!! It ended up being AWESOME. I added on an extra 30 min so they could focus on my scalp b/c it’s my favorite thing plus I also got a really great facial. I was SO relaxed and it was just the perfect timing for a spa day!

You know it’s SO legit when you get done and your hair looks like this and you look so rough that they GIVE you a free hat to wear home hahahaha

We had an awesome first week of summer and were SO pumped to have Kye join us for more summer fun to come! I’m so thankful Zach recovered so well from his back surgery, he had several more weeks of recovery to go but that first week was the most intense of the recovery process since he was on so many meds and couldn’t work!

Summer Recap: Week 1

I work with several companies and links to any products within posts are affiliate.

I LOVE SUMMER! I get super pumped when summer comes around. The kids and I like to have a list of things we want to accomplish over the summer and it’s fun for me to work it all in and make it all happen πŸ™‚

I’m very hardcore about keeping a summer schedule and a big part of that is having a good balance of days at home vs days out and about. Balance = Happiness! Since we are so busy in summer and there is such a mix of days at home vs days on the go I thought it’d make more sense to do weekly recaps of our adventures. Rather than trying to come up with enough to say about everything we do to cover it in a blog post and rather than doing some big huge long monthly summary thing πŸ™‚ Weekly summaries for the win!

The kids get out of school a good bit earlier than the public schools do. I feel like it’s summer bonus time πŸ™‚

Our first week of summer kicked off on Saturday May 16th! I plan to consider a week from Sat-Sat so here’s what we were up to on Week 1:

Colt and Payton are 11 months apart in age (yes, Irish twins right?!?! Isn’t that what it’s called?). Courtney had their party together this year at Tiny Bubbles. Y’all. If you are local and need a place for a party then Tiny Bubbles is where it’s AT. They handle EVERYTHING. It’s efficient, well planned, organized, and SUPER fun. We’ve been to a couple of parties there and have always left very impressed! You can look into booking a party here!

After the party that morning Katie and I met up for pedicures. In honor of her 30th birthday Zach and I wanted to do something special for her so we had the pedicures together, got dinner, and then she came over to hang out after kids went to bed. We had a great time! It was also my first pedicure in 2 years (you can read my latest foot update here!)

Zach brought the kids to Steak and Shake and we met him there after our pedicures for dinner. We don’t eat out a lot, but when we do Steak and Shake is one of our favorites. Kids eat free on Sat and Sunday. We paid for Katie’s meal too and all got food (except Tess) and the total was still only $18. You can’t beat that!!! Plus free hats? Duh. Awesome.

Katie is one of the first people I met when I started coming to Valdosta to see Zach. I believe we actually met for the first time at Steak and Shake? Our friendship grew early on and we’ve been through so much together. We’ve been friends now for 11 years! I’m so thankful to have her as a constant in my life when so many other people haven’t been. I know she’ll be my family for life! I made a photo collage for her bday and had THE hardest time narrowing down what pics to include b/c we have so many awesome memories together πŸ™‚

On Sunday we were invited to Preston’s birthday party (my friend Ashley’s son). It was at a local park I’d never even knew existed and it was SO NICE! It was a great place to throw a party and it was super fun! Ashley is one of the sweetest people and she put together a great party that everyone enjoyed. It was also pretty hilarious when all the kids “helped” Preston open his presents. Hello chaos haha.

Kye writes such sweet notes!

The kids made hero capes which Kye really enjoyed (so much so that I copied the idea later on in the summer!). Kye also created a new snack that is cupcakes with cheese-its on top. Yum? Britt had a good time at the party too, but didn’t want to eat anything. Which is not like her. Pizza? Cupcakes? How could she refuse that?!?!

That night we realized why Britt wasn’t wanting to eat. She wins the prize for first child in our family to ever keep us up all night with diarrhea. FUN. I’m thankful we’re just now experiencing it for the firs time and that our kids don’t vomit (knock on wood). I actually have only thrown up a couple times in my life that I can remember so I’m hoping they got my good non-puking genes haha. It was pitiful being up with her while she went to the bathroom. At first Zach and I got up together but then I ended up just getting up with her. I remember as a kid having my stomach be messed up through the night like that and my dad sitting with me rubbing my belly. It’s one of my favorite memories (random, I know, but it was a loving moment with my dad). As a parent though I don’t know how my mom slept through that stuff! Zach said he’d take turns with me to get up but there was just no way I could keep sleeping! I loaded her up on pedialite and planned to kick off our first official week day of summer with a relaxing movie day πŸ™‚

No sleep…yet all smiles!

I was worried it’d pass around to all of us but we stuck to a bland diet and no one else really got sick. Zach did a little, but not too bad. And even Britt never had any more issues!

He never complains about a movie day πŸ˜‰

On Tuesday we hung out at home and enjoyed some early morning outside time. We don’t go out front a whole lot because the back yard is just easier and has more options of things to do but the kids like to go in the driveway to play in their cars and use chalk (Daddy said no chalk allowed on the cool deck in the back!). We had a sad realization that morning that Kye can no longer fit in his Cozy Coupe at all. Oh I could cry! I’m probably going to go ahead and sell it at the next kids sale because if we do have another son I’m sure we’ll want to get him a new one!

That afternoon we loaded up and headed to Hobby Lobby to get supplies for some summer crafting. With Tess still needing two naps a day I knew we’d have to spend a good chunk of time at home and I was very worried about the kids bickering all summer. Crafts to the rescue! I didn’t get anything too creative. I looked for cheap deals on easy stuff. Mostly just simple things to color or paint. I kept it basic so the kids could hopefully do a lot of it on their own without much instruction πŸ˜‰ (meaning: a good time for Mommy to get things done while they are occupied!)

On Wednesday we had some friends over to swim! Robyn and her crew and Casey and Carter came to enjoy the pool and play together! It was SO FUN and just a great way to kick off the summer season!

My favorite thing about that afternoon was Kye and Lorelai. Robyn and I met when they were little babies. They are 1 month apart in age and were forced to be friends haha. We have pictures of them literally just laying on the floor beside each other. And now? They are legit friends who have SO MUCH fun together! It was so great hearing them laughing and creating games together!

Right now Cooper and Britt aren’t quite yet to the legit friendship stage…they are 6 months apart so I bet by next year the gap won’t seem as large!

LL was ALL about holding Tess. It was precious!

Mom Squad πŸ™‚

If you’re a regular blog reader then you know that Tess has always been my bottle struggle baby. For Memorial Day Zach and I were going away for our anniversary and the weeks prior to our trip Tess started refusing the bottle again. Ugh. I actually nursed her at the swim birthday party just in front of everyone b/c she didn’t take a bottle. I didn’t let myself get overly stressed about it. I bought a couple sippies and figured we’d just go ahead and transition her to that but it didn’t work either. She also wouldn’t drink the bottle from Zach. When I got the pedicure she only drank like 2 oz.

We decided to do the same method we did before our Hawaii trip. Mrs. Charlotte took Tess a day early to help her get adjusted with the bottle before we left. She still refused the sippy but she did end up taking the bottle FINE for Mrs. Charlotte! I swear G-Mama has a magic touch!!!

Since Tess was having such a great time with G-Mama, Zach and I enjoyed some solo big kid time. Thur nights kids eat free at Atlanta Bread Co so we decided to go there and then hit up The Mix. It was SUCH a fun time! Sometimes the random times are the best πŸ™‚

Kye’s getting good at his picture taking skills!

Every night I’m nursing Tess when the kids play a game so I always have to miss out! It was nice to be able to enjoy the game time with them. I haven’t actually gotten to play with them since Britt started playing games! I dread weaning Tess but one nice thing about it will be being able to be a more active part in the bedtime routine each night. We played Kerplunk! The kids got it as a gift and I LOVED it as a kid!

Zach and I headed out first thing Friday morning for our long weekend away together! So week 1 ended a couple days early πŸ™‚ It was a great first week and really set the tone for what would be an AWESOME summer!!!
