Kye Monthly Summary: September

This post covers Kye’s month of September!

Kye has been VERY business minded as long as I can remember. He loves to find ways to earn money (tricky for a 6 year old!) and all he wants to do with it is SAVE IT. He talks a lot about how he wants to use it to buy a house in our neighborhood so he can live near us with his family 🙂 Of course I encourage that goal 😉

He got to the point where his piggy bank was simply too full. Zach took the time to count it all with him and the girls and I took him up to our bank to open his very own account. He was SO PUMPED!

Little fact about depositing money in a bank…turns out you can’t just bring a big bag of coins up and hand it to them haha. We had to sit down and count it all out and roll it before depositing it. I was very proud of Kye and Britt for working so hard and for Tess for behaving 🙂

Kye deposited $139 into his bank account. He talks a lot about his account and how he wants to earn more money so he can make another deposit. He was also VERY excited about earning interest on that money. When his first statement came in the mail he was pumped. Then he opened it and said “WHAT?!?! MOM! I put ALL that money in the bank and ALL they gave me is $1!!!!” Haha!

We are very proud of Kye and his entrepreneurial spirit. Neither Zach or I were raised in a very “spend smart” way and we have learned SO MUCH over the years about how to better manage money. We are striving to teach our children those tools from a young age!

This month we also got rolling on the Be Kids Bible Studies each night. I LOVED the activities for this month, especially b/c it involved ME getting some relaxation time 🙂 Kye and I stayed up a little late one night and washed each other’s feet while we talked about Jesus. It felt awesome and I actually surprised Z when he got home and washed his for him too 🙂 It’s such a romantic thing and also made me think about Ashleigh as she and Brad washed each others feet at their wedding (which I LOVE).

He also made a jar filled with words of encouragement for someone! He did this all on his own and chose Little Mama which was so sweet. It was also such a God thing because in the coming months she ended up breaking her wrist as well as getting a bad cold so I’m sure these words of encouragement have truly encouraged her during her tough time!

School continues to go well for Kye. We got some news this month that required some changes to his daily school routine which was quite an adjustment for him (more to come in a future post) but he overall still very much enjoys school! He LOVES Accelerated Reader and gets a 100 every single morning. He reads the book 2-3 times at night so he can take a test first thing when he gets to school then runs to the library to get out another book. I believe he’s read the entire Clifford collection at this point ha! He is allowed to check out books that are up to the blue color which is a 3rd grade reading level and he still have no issues reading them! He also knew all his sight words for the first 9 weeks the first time the teacher practiced them with him 🙂

They have a math app they do at school and we got a letter saying to start having him do it at home as well. It’s crazy that his HOMEWORK is on the IPAD! He is pretty excited about that as we’ve never let our kids use our technology. I’m just big on play and don’t like electronics for kids. He is pumped for this math app opportunity!

His behavior has also been great. His teacher always tells me that he’s a natural leader and that all the kids really look up to him, which of course makes my heart happy as my goal for him in his life is to lead others to Christ! He’s never pulled a clip or at any behavioral issues at all.

I try not to be annoying to him so I don’t overly ask about his day. He doesn’t like to talk a lot about it and it’s hard for me not to ask 1,000 questions! I just hug on him when he gets home and ask him how his day was and if anything interesting happened (fyi this is also exactly how i have to be with Zach when he’s home from work…dude doesn’t like to be asked a lot of questions!). Then when I tuck him in at night I lay with him and ask if there is anything on his heart he’d like to share. He usually opens up the most at that time of day which I enjoy and appreciate 🙂

Every afternoon I go out and wait for him to get off the bus. It’s one of my favorite moments of the day. I LOVE seeing his smiling face! It makes me so thankful we chose the lot we did for our home because we are the perfect spot for the bus 🙂

One afternoon he asked if he could take of his shirt and shoes and just RUN in the yard b/c he really felt the need to do it haha!

Zach was able to eat lunch with him this month which meant the world to Kye! G-mama also went one day as well as Big Papa. I’d like to try to go more often but it’s tough with Tess still having a morning nap and him eating lunch at 10:50!  Zach said Kye is Mr Popular b/c a ton of kids kept coming up to him and saying hey 🙂

I know Common Core gets a LOT of crap from people. So far, it hasn’t been an issue for us. I do think it’s hilarious that the teacher has to send home tips for parents about how to do it! Really to me the common core way makes more sense. As an adult don’t you naturally group things in 10s? I know that’s how I count so it’s really just teaching them how to do that. We’ll see how it all pans out but I’m not hardcore against it or for it or anything. I just feel like it is what it is. Kye never knew any other way of learning so we just have to help him do his best with it and not stress it!

Kye has his first every book fair this month. I didn’t even think anything about it as we aren’t big on spending money randomly and we have a TON of books. Well Zach dropped him at school one day and saw the book fair sign and remembered how much he loved it as a kid so he gave Kye $3 to spend. That $3 ended up being one hilarious story 🙂

Kye got home and told me how Daddy gave him money and he went to the Book Fair and that NOTHING was only $3. He said he kept taking things up to the counter to buy and they kept telling him “you don’t have enough” so he would take the item back and try again with another one. He said he almost had tears about it. Finally he just bought a Ninja Turtles How to Draw Book b/c it’s the only thing he could afford to get. He said “I know it’s not appropriate but it’s all I could buy!” HAHAHA He told the whole story (in a much more drawn out way) to Katie one night and we were DYING. We don’t do super heroes or ninja turtles in our home and he knows that and he has no desire to have anything to do with them b/c “they aren’t appropriate.” Which totally cracks me up.

I gave him $5 the next day so he could go back and he got a Pete The Cat book 🙂 Mom for the win 😉

Doing homework!

This month Kye came home telling me about a girl in his class that he thinks has a Godly heart. He told me I was NOT allowed to laugh but that she “has teeth like Mater” haha Kye still has all his baby teeth and most of the kids in his class have lots of missing teeth or that huge looking adult teeth look which does kinda look like Mater!

He told me he wanted to ask the girl to be his girl friend but that he was nervous. I suggested for him to write her a note. He wrote it and gave it to her and told me that when he gave it to her he told her “you should take this home and ask your parents to read it to you” because he was worried she wouldn’t be able to read all the words on her own! ha!!! I wonder what in the world her parents thought when she brought it home! He says she’s his girl friend and that they always play together on the playground and he shares his snack with her so I guess it’s official 😉

My favorite personality trait about Kye is his Godly heart. He truly cares for others and is so thoughtful. I pack his lunch every day and always include a little note along with sometimes a little treat. He said he felt sorry for his friend at school b/c he doesn’t get notes in his lunch box so he wrote some notes to give him during lunch time 🙂

Of course the day before picture day Kye fell on the playground and got pretty beat up!

Nope, I didn’t buy it 🙂

Kye also talked to me about wanting some mints for school so we put some Tic Tacs in his book bag for him. He better not be trying to kiss anyone with that minty fresh breath!

The kids and Zach LOVE to play hide and seek. I don’t love it? It makes me feel really anxious when I can’t find people. I don’t mind hiding, I just don’t like the seeking part. Anyway Kye has gotten GOOD at his hiding spots. At least until he hit inside one of my laundry room hampers and ripped it. Thankful for a husband who can sew 😉

I prefer family board games where we can sit and visit and be together. Britt has gotten REALLY into games now and it’s tricky b/c Kye is a little older and kinda “over” what he calls the “baby games.” No one is ever too old for Hungry Hippos!

He may be a big kid at school with a girl friend but he still loves his Mama. I cherish these precious notes from my sweet boy!

Watching him in his bed reading at night makes me literally get tears in my eyes. We put him to bed around 7:30 (by the time we do the bible study and I talk with him it’s usually closer to 745) then let him read through his book for AR. I think reading before falling asleep is SUCH a great routine. My dad does that a lot and I wish I did it! I love to watch him on the monitor as he reads and listen to him read the book. It’s just simply precious.

Kye is SUCH a helper. I don’t think having a third kid would be NEARLY as smooth as it is if I didn’t have Kye! He’s legit helpful. And it’s a true blessing! I had to go down to Carters and I’m kinda hardcore about deals so it takes me AWHILE to figure out everything (math is important for deal shopping). Kye helped keep Britt entertained and helped push Tess around so I could get it done!

We had Zaxbys after for dinner (Kids nights are the best!) and Kye carried the tray with all our food for me. He’s SO GROWN!

And he orders Nibblers instead of chicken fingers AND he wants Zax sauce!

He’s not too big for a kiddie ride at least 😉

Kye’s sisters truly adore him. I need to be praying for his wife b/c she’s going to have a tough time! I know how hard it was for me with Zach’s sisters and I can see Britt and Tess being just as, if not more so, protective of their big brother!

More About Kye:

  • When he and Britt play he is always a “madtractis” which he says is similar to a bear. It’s hilarious
  • He REALLY loved skiing last year. He brings it up pretty often and asks to go back!
  • Boy Scouts came to school and did a big pitch and Kye came home talking about wanting to join. It’s the first thing that he’s really shown interest in. Which made me nervous b/c it’s not something I can see our family diving into. Nothing against Boy Scouts but I think the big appeal of it, to me, is the togetherness and bonding time and that’s something we just already make a big priority in our home. Kye said the two things that made him want to do it were using bow and arrows and going camping. I asked him if we planned a camping trip just him and Daddy and if we asked for a bow and arrow for Christmas if he would still want to do Boy Scouts and he said no. Whew 😉
  • He no longer gives Zach kisses! OMG heartbreaking. He told Zach that “men don’t kiss each other” and Zach said he understood and goes for hugs instead. I told him he better not try that junk with me b/c it ain’t gonna fly with Mama!
  • He doesn’t like to kiss me either AND he wipes it away pretty much every time. Y’all. I can’t handle it. It feels like just yesterday he’d kiss me and hold my head so he could kiss me longer. TOO FAST guys TOO DANG FAST!
  • In the car one afternoon he randomly said to me “Mommy I love you” I told him I love him too and he said “No I REALLY really love you. I just want to spend more time with you!” SO sweet!
  • Zach and I randomly watched some videos from Kye’s first Disney Trip. Y’all. We both cried. No. Joke. Zach said he even got emotional at school with Kye because he saw the 4th graders and realized how quickly Kye will be their age.
