6 Months Old!

Here's how Kye is doing compared to what the book What to Expect The First Year says he "should" be doing for his age (and some pictures of him playing with Daddy's hat too!):

Kye can do all the things a six month old "should" be doing including:
  • keep head level with body when pulled to sitting
  • say "ah-goo" or similar vowel-consonant combinations
  • pretty short list for the "should be's" huh?

Kye can do most of the things that a six month old "will probably, may possibly, and even may" be able to do including:
  • bear some weight on legs when held to upright
  • sit without support
  • turn in the direction of a voice
  • razz
  • stand holding on to someone or something (not for too long but he can do it!)
  • object if you try to take a toy away
  • work to get a toy out of reach
  • pass a cube or object from one hand to the other
  • look for dropped object
  • babble, combining vowels and consonants such as ga-ga-ga, ba-ba-ba, ma-ma-ma, da-da-da
  • creep or crawl (can't crawl but he can get from one place to another so I guess that's creeping?)

Things Kye can't quite do yet include:
  • rake with fingers a tiny object and pick it up in fist (I don't give him tiny object EVER so how would I know???)
  • feed self cracker or other finger food (I'm sure he could do it but I'm not ready for him to have finger foods yet)
  • pull up to a standing position from sitting (he did it in the tub but that's it, does that count?)
  • get into a sitting position from stomach
  • pick up tiny object with any part of thumb or finger (again, haven't attempted)
  • say "mama" or "dada"

Reading over the book in this section was pretty interesting. It's almost funny that the first part was about a baby not sleeping through the night still! I can't imagine if we were dealing with that at this point! A lot of this part had to do with using the "big" bath. I guess it's time for us to get some of those anti-skid things for the bottom of the tub! I think Kye will like being out of that small tub anyway but it had some tips that I need to remember to tell Zach like that it's ok for Kye to splash but that we shouldn't splash him, that we should test the water with our elbow not hand (I like to use the temperature ducky he has to check it), and we shouldn't drain the tub with him still in it b/c it's scary and b/c he'll get cold which isn't good! All things I hadn't even thought of! I'm a little nervous to move him out of the infant tub right now just because he isn't always 100% steady sitting up and I'd hate for him to crash down, hurt himself, then hate the bath (I read that babies can be pretty traumatized by a bad bathing experience). So we'll probably wait until he's a little older but still good to be thinking about!
